1860 Rifle Range Orders
RCO = Range Conducting Officer.
Only holders of a valid NRA Safety Certification Card (SCC) may shoot unsupervised.
STOP STOP STOP = CEASE FIRE. Anyone may call it. Hands off and await instruction.
Firearms must be visibly safe, with a breech flag fitted. If a flag cannot be fitted, the bolt must be open before moving from the firing point.
Firearms may only be loaded on the firing point, pointed at the target, with RCO permission.
All firearms must be cleared by the RCO before leaving the firing point.
No sighting anywhere except on the firing point, with RCO permission.
Firearms must be carried muzzle up.
Any shooting position is permitted, except standing on D Range.
Hearing protection is mandatory on or near the firing point and in the butts. Eye protection is recommended.
No shooting under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Shooters are responsible for ensuring their firearms are in safe working order.
All misfires must follow the misfire procedure below.
Energy Limits and Home Loads
HME rifles or ammunition may not be used without prior RCO approval.
Maximum muzzle energy: non-HME 4500 J, HME 7000 J.
Maximum velocity (all ammunition): 3280 ft/sec.
Home loads must be declared and may need to be chronographed.
Only members who have signed and lodged the NSRA Reloading Code of Practice may use home loads. [Check: NRA or NSRA]
Misfire Procedure
Keep the firearm pointed downrange for 30 seconds.
Raise your hand, inform the RCO and warn nearby shooters.
Open the bolt, keeping your hands and face clear of the breech.
Inspect the ejected round. If you are unsure, ask the RCO for help.
Dispose of defective rounds safely. FAC holders may take them home if that calibre is on their certificate. Otherwise, hand them to the NRA Range Office.
Emergency Procedure
Call STOP STOP STOP and make the range safe.
Call 999. Give your location (Altcar Range) and the nature of the injury.
Inform the Range Office immediately so they can guide the ambulance in.
Give first aid if you are trained, and stay with the casualty.
